Senior leadership without another full-time appointment
There comes a point in the growth of many businesses when the leadership model that helped them get started is no longer enough to take them forward.
The organisation may have grown significantly, but too much still depends on the founder. Senior managers may be capable within their individual areas, but lack the structure, authority or shared direction needed to operate as a genuine leadership team. Important strategic work is repeatedly delayed because urgent operational issues continue to dominate the agenda.
A permanent executive appointment may eventually be the right answer, but it is also a significant commitment. Recruitment takes time, the cost is substantial and the business may not yet need a full-time CEO, COO or transformation leader.
Fractional executive leadership provides an alternative. It brings experienced, board-level thinking into the business on a part-time and retained basis, while remaining focused on practical delivery rather than simply producing recommendations.

What is a fractional CEO or fractional COO?
A fractional executive is an experienced senior leader who works with your organisation for an agreed number of days each month.
Unlike a traditional consultant who may review the business, deliver a report and step away, a fractional CEO or COO becomes part of the leadership structure.
They attend leadership and board meetings, help make decisions, establish priorities, support senior colleagues and remain accountable for moving agreed work forward.
The arrangement is flexible, but the responsibility is real.
A fractional executive may be brought in to strengthen the overall direction of the business, improve operational performance, develop the leadership team or support the organisation through a particular period of growth or change.
The exact role depends on what the business needs.
Insight
When fractional leadership can help

01
Growth has created complexity
The business has grown, but its structure, processes and leadership arrangements have not evolved at the same pace. Decisions take longer, accountability is becoming less clear and different parts of the organisation are beginning to work in isolation.
02
Too much depends on the founder
The founder or managing director remains involved in almost every important decision. This limits growth, creates operational pressure and prevents them from focusing on the areas where they add the greatest value.
03
The senior team needs stronger direction
The business has experienced managers, but they are operating as individual department heads rather than as a united leadership team. Priorities may be unclear, difficult issues remain unresolved and there is no consistent operating rhythm.
04
Strategy is not translating into action
There may be a clear vision or business plan, but day-to-day activity is not consistently aligned with it. Projects start without clear ownership, priorities regularly change and progress is difficult to measure.
05
The organisation is preparing for its next stage
The business may be preparing for investment, acquisition, succession, a new market, regulatory change or a significant increase in scale. Fractional leadership can help strengthen the organisation before that transition takes place.
06
A full-time appointment is not yet justified
The business needs more senior leadership capacity, but does not require, or cannot yet justify, the cost and commitment of another permanent C-suite appointment.

How engagements are structured
Every organisation is different, so engagements are designed around your specific goals, challenges and ambitions rather than a fixed package.
Fractional leadership is typically provided through a monthly retainer, with the level of support shaped by the responsibility, involvement and outcomes required. Engagements generally start from £2,000 per month plus VAT and are usually agreed for an initial period of six months, providing enough time to build momentum and deliver meaningful progress.
We’ll begin with a conversation to understand your priorities, current situation and where you want to get to. From there, we can agree a level of support that feels right for your business and creates the greatest value for your team and organisation.
